The Hip Implant Systems

There are multiple styles of implants marketed by a variety of companies including DePuy, Stryker, Zimmer, Smith & Nephew and Wright Medical. Implant systems may consist of ceramic, metal or polyethylene material. Some systems are metal-on-metal (MoM), but many marry a combination of material. The choices for the orthopedic surgeon are numerous.

The total hip replacement implant normally carries three parts, the stem which fits into the femur, the ball which replaces the spherical head of the femur and the cup which replaces the worn out hip socket. In some designs the stem and ball are one piece, but usually they are modular allowing the surgeon to customize the fit. Improvements in both materials and methods have resulted in a favorable success rate.

The Procedure

The total hip replacement surgery requires removal of damaged cartilage and bone from the hip socket and the top of the femur. The acetabular, referred to as the “cup,” is inserted into the hip socket. The femoral component consists of a ball and stem. The stem is placed in the femur or thigh bone, and the ball replaces the head of the femur. The ball and the femur are then aligned with the cup in the hip socket.
