Even The Pros Need Refreshers When it Comes to Driving

Spokane auto accident attorneyEven if you are a great driver with a flawless driving record, you can benefit from a refresher course in traffic safety. So many aspects of driving can change almost overnight. Even if you’ve only been driving for five or ten years, the rules that you learned in driver’s education might now be obsolete.

Keep your driving skills up to date

Driving instructors like Shaun de Jager recommend that everyone take a refresher driver’s ed course every five or ten years to ensure that they are all up to date on the rules of the road.

In the meantime, here are some tips for keeping your driving skills up to date.

  1. Refine your technique. Over the years, some of the finer points from driver’s ed become lost. We all get sloppy. We develop bad driving habits. Look critically at your driving. Where is there room for improvement?
  2. Get your vision checked. Regular eye exams play a key part in your driving ability. You might not be aware if your prescription has changed or if you need glasses for the first time. Your eyes are the most important tool when it comes to driving and, as with any tool, they must be maintained.
  3. Keep up on your car’s maintenance and safety features. Adjust your mirrors, check your oil and brakes regularly, and check that your safety features such as ABS or back-up cams are still working properly. Don’t take your safety features for granted. Back-up cameras can fail, as can brakes. Keeping your car well-maintained will prevent more expensive repairs or more severe accidents later on.
  4. Avoid uncomfortable situations. If you feel nervous driving at night or during inclement weather, avoid driving in those conditions when you can. If you can’t, then reduce your speed and take extra safety precautions. It’s better to get where you’re going late than not at all.
